While hunting this year, I read my first book ever for pure enjoyment. And to be honest, it didn't even kill me. I've never been a huge reader. My mind always wonders when I read, and to be honest and rather curl up on the couch and watch some SportsCenter than read a book. However, hunting was really slow this year, and there were barely any deer. So I went into my dad's room and grabbed the shortest book I could find. I did try and read a non picture book being that I'm 20 now, even though the pictures do actract me a lot. I landed on "Of Mice and Men", by John Steinbeck. First of all I loved it. It was an amazing book. However, my blog is not about the book "Of Mice and Men", or how everyone should read. My blog is about a new device called Kindle. Here is a link talking about the important facts of Kindle. http://www.squidoo.com/someAmazonKindleInfo
My parents love to read, which is wierd considering I don't. My dad on the last Harry Potter book, made himself a big bowl of popcorn, and read the entire book in one sitting. So yeah, it's safe to say they are avid readers. I figured a Kindle would be the perfect Christmas present for the both of them from me. I asked my mom if that would be a good present for Dad, (looking for her reaction seeing if she would like one too). Her response was simple. "It's a great idea Andy, but that just really isn't for us." And thinking about it, that is exactly what Kindle is to me, is a great idea. My mom said she read a book on Kindle before, and she couldn't even finish the chapter. She said she got such a bad headache from reading it, and that for some reason she couldn't seem to get into the story because she wasn't reading a "book". The following is a link discussing the downside of Kindles. http://buycheapappleipad.org/is-reading-ibooks-on-ipad-iphone-ipod-touch-bad-for-the-eyes/
Like I said earlier, it might be a thing about older people and not liking new technology, but they like the feeling of reading from an actual book, rather than a computer type device. I know I wouldn't enjoy starring at my laptop reading a book. And that is basically what a Kindle is, is a laptop looking device that doens't have a keyboard. There are definately some positives to Kindles, and it is a great idea, however I just don't think it's something for me. The following are some positives about Kindles, and discussing if it will take over reading books. http://doloresmonet.hubpages.com/hub/KindleVSRealBooksWillEBooksReplaceRealBooks

Skype-keeping the WORLD in touch
Skype continues to become more and more popular. Skype has got it all. If you haven't heard of skype yet, here is the url to sign up for it. http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/welcomeback/. To briefly describ what Skype is, is it's a slight version of Facebook, that you can video chat with other friends. The great thing about Skype it literally only takes 2-3 minutes to set up. It is very easy, which is a great positive for it. In Skype, you can set up a profile, describing you, along with a profile picture. Skype didn't use to have a picture gallery like Facebook, but however, two years ago Skype added a picture gallery to it. So now you can share pictures of your life on your Skype.
So what is so great about Skype? First of all, I will use the messenger on Skype way more than I will on Facebook. Skype messaging is way faster and way easier than on Facebook. But the main component of Skype is the video chatting. I, along with a lot of my friends have Skype, so it is a great way to keep in touch with friends. Facebook is really known for that, but on Skype, you get a face to face conversation with someone. It actually seems like you are right there talking to the person the quality is so good. Here is a link describing the video conversation quality. http://about.skype.com/
Is there one factor that has suddenly made Skype bloom so much? The answer is the war. Imagine having one of your loved ones fighting in Iraq. Letters and pictures just don't really cut it after awhile. Hearing your loved ones voice and actually seeing them right in front of them has become the most popular tool used to communicate in the war. It keeps families closer with their loved one fighting for our country. Here is an article discussing how soldiers use Skype to stay close with their families. http://www.mobiledia.com/news/117704.html

Black Friday really being "Black"
Black Friday. A few things pop in my head when I hear those two words. Excitement is probably the first thing that comes to my mind. The excitement of finding great deals for myself gets me up at two in the morning. Actually, this year we didn't even go to bed. Just stayed up at shopped all night. When I go shopping on black Friday I don't usually have a certain product in mind, I just like to find things I like for cheap. Here is a site talking about why people go out on blakc Friday. http://cjonline.com/news/2011-11-25/black-friday-time-shop-people-watch
The next thing I think about is people. My God there is people everywhere. We went to Target, and the line to get in was wrapped around the building. I literally could see the Target sign while I was at the end of the line because it was so long. I think we all have a hormone inside of us that makes us forget about all the people on out shopping on Black Friday. Because this year did it for me. I will not be going out next year because it was so unbelievably stressful and frustrating. I say this now, but im sure I'll be getting up next year again to go shopping. It is flat out dangerous. People absolutely go nuts during black Friday. There have even been deaths, where people are trampled to death. This year, a lady used pepper spray to get to the front of a line.
http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/11/26/us-usa-retail-violence-idUSTRE7AO15H20111126
People, you really don't need to go out on black Friday. I can't really back up my words right now since I went out, and didn't even have a reason to. However, there is a thing called Cyber Monday. Cyber Monday is an online shopping day the Monday after Thanksgiving. It has great deals on it, not quite as good as black Friday, but there are plenty of great deals. There are plenty of other reasons not to shop on Black Friday. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2011/11/25/national/a222013S93.DTL. Here is a site listing many reasons why you don't need to go out on black Friday.

Life being a teenager is hard. Peer pressure, parents, sports and homework is difficult. And no one seems to understand. Finally a 15 year old teenager caught what many may endure at school on film. A is teacher bullying a student.
This happens more that you think. I have seen many occasions where a teacher seems to have it out for one particular student and there is nothing to do. Not anymore. With the internet and every media available to tell the world your story situations like this will not go unheard.
The internet age has provided everyone a way to show and prove there story to the world. Instead of just hearsay of a child or a concerned parent you have a full video or a teacher, someone who is supposed to be a mentor intimidating a child.
Digital Communication or communicating to people across the world or the country is important to show an unbiased side of every story if you can film it or document it you can show people everywhere what is happening to you. These stories are not an epidemic nor are they a wave of sexual assault across the country however it is happening to hundreds of young adults and now they have the ammo to back up there case and fix their problem. Teachers should be there to help you not to intimidate you or to assault you. Who knows how many times this happens to young adults in America. But hopefully it will reduce, since every individual know the internet is out there to record you’re every action. Who knows how many teachers, mentors or individuals have been bullying students to do what they want.
Life as a teenager is hard. There are so many things stressing you out and the last thing you need is a mentor to mess with the unstable balance you have with all of them. Finally now the young adult has something to be at bat in there corner, something more than “this teacher is picking on me” the internet, out for the young adult. The most technologically advanced generation finally has the will power to show the world what happens to them in their life.

Twitter and professional athletes
Twitter. Everyone has heard about this social network called Twitter. Twitter is an online social network, and microblogging service that enables its users to send and read text-based posts, of 140 characters or less, much known as "tweets. If you would like a better understanding of Twitter and tweets, click on this link. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twitter One thing about Twitter is you can follow famous people. You can follow your favorite athletes. In fact, that's what my blog is about today, athletes and Twitter.
Pretty much every professional athlete has Twitter. In fact, of the 32 teams in the NFL, there are 1,254 current athletes using Twitter. If you would like to find out which NFL players have Twitter click on this link. http://www.tweeting-athletes.com/ I have no problem with any professional athlete having Twitter. In fact, that's what made Twitter so popular. You get to see actual tweets from your favorite players. It's exciting to see what they are up to, or what they are thinking about, or if they're coming to a town near you. However, that's what Twitter for any professional athlete should be kept to. When athletes start opening their mouth about their team, or the game that was just played is when they get into seroius trouble.
One football analysist stated "Athletes and Twitter go together about as good as oil and water." A lot of them just like to see how far they can push critics and others with their tweets. For example, Reggie Bush, former New Orleans Saints, heard a rumor about not getting resigned by his team when his contract was up and he tweeted "It's been fun New Orleans, but obviously I'm not wanted anymore." Turns out the team had full intensions of resigning Bush, however after that tweet, they had no interest in him anymore. Bush went on to make much less money and got signed by the Miami Dolphins, and is now on a team that hasn't even won a game yet. This is just one example of how a simple Tweet can cause you a heep of trouble. So athletes, we know you like to get a better audience, and maybe getting your voice out there is a way to do it. However if you still want a job, and still want fans, lets think before we tweet. Here is the countless list of things athletes have tweeted poorly about, which have caused consequences. http://www.bareknucks.com/athletes-and-twitter-mix-like-oil-water-please-stop-tweeting.

World of Pandora
Pandora. Oh how I have fallen in love with Pandora. I honestly don't even know where to begin. I'll start by explaining what Pandora is. Pandora is a free radio station online. The bad thing about radio stations is you only like maybe 1 out of the 4 songs that play. Sure you can listen to a rock station if you like rock, country if for some insane reason you like country, or just today's hits. Still, there are plenty of songs you don't know, or even flat out don't like. Man don't you just hate it when that happens.
Oh wait, on Pandora you can type in a band that you like. Don't worry it doesn't just play songs from that band like a cd. It plays songs by that band, and songs that are similar to them. For example, If I type in Dave Matthews, it plays Dave and bands like O.A.R, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and Jack Johnson. You can also type in more than one band on one station. Maybe you want a radio station that is more chill music, than another time you want some good ol rock and roll. You guessed it, you can have more than one station. Also, you can shuffle through the difference stations, not by pressing it by hand, but just by hitting the shuffle button once, then chill out for hours and listen to non stop radio.http://www.pandora.com/corporate/
Even if you do come across a song that you don't like, instead like driving in the car you have to flip through all the radio stations to try and find another song you like, just hit the next button. It's unreal how amazing pandora really is. The only downside of Pandora that I have found is that you only get 4 "nexts" per hour. I haven't even run into it much, I usually like all the music Pandora plays. Here is the link to Pandora. http://www.pandora.com/
Pandora is a free radio. Their slogan is "We have a single mission: to play only music you love." You can suscribe to Pandora, but really the only change is you can next however many times you want, and you don't get a 10 second add after three songs. Here is a site discussing the terms and agreements to subscribing. http://blog.pandora.com/pandora/archives/2009/05/pandora-one-upg.html
Now that you know about Pandora, the only question I have for you, is do you think Pandora will ever make it to an actual radio. For example, do you think you can be driving down the road, listening to Pandora.

The media and professional sports
Let's face it, even though baseball is my favorite sport, I can see where people watching on television could find it a little boring. I ofcourse have never had this problem. I know the little things that happen on every pitch. However, to someone who doesn't know the game so well could get bored during a three plus hour baseball game. The Minnesota Twins do a great job of taking care of that problem. The Twins had a very, well to put it nicely, a horrible year. So they definately needed to do something to keep the fans interested. http://www.jasonfpeck.com/2010/08/23/sports-and-social-media-why-should-fans-care/
During games, the Twins have several questions they ask the fans to respond to. The two announcers for the Twins, Dick and Bert, really have a fun time with these. They make it a competition between the two and they actually can go a long long time without getting a question wrong. Another thing they do is polls. During the game you can either go on the internet or use your phone to decide who should be the player of the game. Another big promotion they do is "Sit in the booth for an inning. During the game, and if your at the game you can use your cellphone to send in to the booth and if your lucky enough you get to sit with Dick and Bert for an inning. The following link is information on Bert Blyleven in the booth. http://minnesota.twins.mlb.com/team/broadcasters.jsp?c_id=min
These are all great ways organizations use new media to get their fans more involved. When the fans can actually see their question on tv, or get to sit up in the booth for an inning on tv, it makes them more involved with the team. Fans can related to the team more when they have activities like this. Owners know this, and try and get fans involved as much as possible. http://bizofbaseball.com/

Newspapers still able to enjoy New Media
Newspapers are dying these days in America. http://journalism.about.com/od/trends/a/dyingpapers.htm We get most of our information off of the internet. Not too many people read the newspaper anymore. The only thing I ever read in newspapers is baseball scores and the funnies. I think part of the reason we read more online than read newspapers is because there is usually better pictures online. Visual aids is very important when reading information. It helps us get a better idea of things when we can actually see what we are reading.
The first thing that comes to mind is the Minot flood. If you read in a newspaper that there was a flood in a town, you would feel bad. I think the feeling wouldn't last very long though and you would go right on reading other articles. However, if there is pictures of the houses that are getting destroyed, and places you know that are completely covered in water, it sets in a lot more and is more dramatic.
Cell phones these days can basically do it all. One thing that cellphones have majorly improved on is the camera quality. The quality of cameras on cellphones these days is so high, you can't tell the difference between a cellphone picture and a picture from a high definition camera. Here is a site talking about how cameras on phones have improved over the years. http://news.cnet.com/8301-30685_3-20001061-264.html
The newspapers in Minot had many cellphone pictures on the front page. In the caption of the pictures it would say this photo is taken by so and so by their cell phone, and it looks like a high definition picture. This really helps newspapers out because they can get pictures from people that they might not be able to get themselves. This makes their newspaper article more enjoyable to read. I do however think that newspapers will be around for quite sometime. There are actually many people that prefer to read a newspaper. http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2009/01/19/let-newspapers-die-already.html

Shopping online a benefit for both producers and consumers?
Shopping online emerged about a decade ago, and is a new and great way to shop. There are many reasons why shopping online keeps growing and growing every year. When thinking about why you would want to shop online, the first thing that comes to mind is convenience. If you want to go shopping you don't have to dress up and drive to the store. Then you have to deal with traffic. When you get to the store you have to deal with crowdness and angry stressful shoppers. Or, you can wake up, make a pot of coffee, and sit down and relax while moving your mouse, looking at all the endless posibilities that you can buy. http://anamikas.hubpages.com/hub/Online-shopping-sites-benefits
There are many other advantages for a consumer to shop online other than convenience. There is a greater variety online than just what is in the stores. You also get a better price on the things you are shopping for online. The products come directly to you from the manufacturer or the seller, so there is no middleman involved. http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~jinnie/advantage.html
Online shopping is also great for the seller. Selling products online is a great way to view and track consumer purchase patterns. This is great for the seller because he or she can see what is hot and what is a bust. Their site can track what has been clicked on or viewed, and see what is being purchased. http://montyalexander.articlesbase.com/ecommerce-articles/online-shopping-benefits-for-the-business-owner-459836.html Sellers also enjoy online shopping because they also dont have to go through the middle man. They are able to avoid expenditures such as hoarding the product. All in all, I think online shopping can benefit the lazy stressful shopper like myself. I would much rather sit at home on my nice comfy couch, then deal with the stresses of shopping at stores, especially during the holidays.

Yankees going home?
As I'm writting this blog I had a tough time coming up with a topic to write on. I look up and see the Yankees playing and I decided to somehow tie it into social media. The New York Yankees are playing the Tigers tonight for the game to go on to the ALCS, and the loser goes home. The Yankees are one of the biggest and most successful franchises in the history of sports. One of the reasons they are so successful is that they have a lot of money to spend, and they go out and buy the best players.
The Yankees literally make the playoffs every year. They are always there, and media is all over it. Media loves the Yankees, because it is a great way to sell their merchandise. Merchandise is sold way better when a team is successful. Not just having a successful season, but year in and year out winning, and winning World Series. Media is a great way to get merchandise out there.
Most sales of merchandise are done online. Most tickets sold, are done online. There are countless amount of things that a franchise like the Yankees use media for.

Facebook with a new look
I got the pleasure last week of seeing everyones status on Facebook complaining about the changes to Facebook. I looked around and apparently mine hadn't updated yet. My roomate was about the only one who wasn't complaining about the new Facebook. He didn't mind it because to him nothing really changed. The reason I always hate when Facebook makes changes is because that is exactly what it is. It's a change that we're not used to, and I think that's why we don't like it. After about a week, people are so used to it by now that they don't even notice it. People are always complaining in their statuses about Facebook changing, and it got kinda old, so i decided when I finally got the new Facebook I would give it a chance. Facebook even made a page of "I like the new Facebook". http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2208207917
Finally, just the other day my Facebook changed when I signed on. I got the new changes to Facebook. The first thing I noticed was the events scrolling constantly on top of the friends online list. I thought that was somewhat cool, because it showed everyone commenting, or adding friends. It even showed things friends would write on their friends wall, even if you aren't friends with that person. The other thing I really liked was the uploaded pictures. If someone adds pictures to their profile, it shows them very clear, and larger on the home page. There are many other additions to Facebook, and here is a link explaining all of them. http://waldo.villagesoup.com/business/brief/online/a-sneak-peek-at-the-new-facebook/451832
After using the new Facebook for a couple days the only thing I could think of that I'm not too sure about is the "ticker". This is the scrolling of everything people are doing on Facebook. I think it might be crossing the line of privacy a little. If you want to make a comment on a picture of a friend, everyone gets to see that because it shows up on the ticker. Im not so sure if I like that, but it definately catches my attention while im on. Most of the complaints that came on statuses is about that ticker. Here is a link of people talking about the ticker. http://www.allfacebook.com/facebook-ticker-kill-2011-09 Overall, I do not mind the new facebook.
Twitter all its tweeted up to be?
Everyone has told me how much I need to get Twitter. All my friends tell me it's way better than facebook, and how I'll hardly ever check my facebook after getting Twitter. I had to get twitter anyways because our baseball coach here at Valley City told us we had to so he could talk to us easier. I figured this was my perfect opportunity to get into Twitter, and see what all the hype is about.
My first day in Twitter I thought it was pretty cool. I added some professional athletes, and quite a bit of Minnesota Twins players, which I thought was pretty cool. However, after a couple days, I found it pretty boring. There is nothing to do on Twitter. It was fun seeing athletes I looked up to, seeing what they were saying. However, that's all it is. I went on there and literally didn't know what to do after that. I still have yet to see what all the hype is about.

Computers in the Classrom
I am a junior transfer from a junior college. When I heard we were getting laptops at Valley City I was super pumped, especially since my current laptop is pretty old and cheap. We can Google things we aren't sure about. Or perhaps listen to music or check your Facebook if there is some down time. However, I am probably one of the few people that think it is a bad idea to have a laptop in the classroom. According to http://www.temple.edu/lss/htmlpublications/spotlights/200/spot206.htm, using a computer in the classroom is very beneficial.
I am a guy who gets distracted pretty easily. Yes, everyone in college is an adult, and is expected to pay attention to the class instead of what is on your computer, and the computer is there for help in the classroom, or taking notes. However, for me it is just a distraction. If my computer isn't closed in the classroom, I am doing something unproductive on it. I was loving the first week of school, because the classes seemed like they were flying by. Then the next week quizzes came out, and I had no idea what was going on. I had become behind in every class because I was so distracted by my computer I hadn't paid any attention to what was going on in the lecture. The following site talks about how addictive Facebook is and how we can't get our minds off of it. http://socialtimes.com/facebook-addiction-disorder-the-6-symptoms-of-f-a-d_b60403
Im sitting there thinking "Come on Andy, put the computer away and pay attention like everyone else." I then looked around and saw Facebook on 4 out of every 5 computers. It's not just me who is easily distracted by computers. I am 100 percent in belief they were given to us to help us in school, and they can be very helpful. However, I am definately ok with going back to the old fashioned highschool, taking notes with a pencil and a notebook. I bought several notebooks and pencils for this semester, and I literally have not had to use either one. I haven't even had an assignment to take home to do. Everything is used on the computer. This just took some time getting used to since the last college I was at did nothing with computers. This site talks about this advantages and disadvantages of using computers in the classroom. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080712164252AA1iB7Y

Youtube is the best thing since sliced bread
I love youtube. I use it when I need a laugh. All I need to do is type in "funny" in the search box, and millions of funny videos come up. I'm also a major movie guy, so if i want to watch trailers for an upcoming movie, this is where I go to watch them. Youtube has also basically my new itunes. If a song is made, there is about a 99.9 percent chance that it will be on youtube. Just last night, I was watching the roast of Charlie Sheen. A girl made a joke on there to Steve-o about his recently killed friend Ryan Dunn in a car crash. She said "I know what you were thinking steve-o like "why wasn't it me who died in that crash" and trust me we all wish it was." The crowd gasped for air and noone really laughed and it showed steve-o's face and there was just a blank stair in his eyes. My friend and I looked at each other and thought wow that was too far. When the show was over, I went on Youtube and typed in "Roast of Charlie Sheen Ryan Dunn joke" and only thirty minutes after it was made, not only was it on Youtube, but it already had over 4,000 views.
Everyone loves youtbe, and it is used constantly. There are over 2 billion videos viewed every day. Over 35 hours of video are uploaded to youtube every minute. These statistics came from the following site. http://www.reelseo.com/youtube-statistics/ It is just a great overal site, and is a form of social media. You can also record something and put it on youtube yourself. I highly recommend people who are not informed about youtube to give it a try, because I think you will love it.

Children and the internet
The internet has become a place for anything and everything. If you have a question about something, there is Google. If you want to watch a video about literally anything, there is Youtube. If you want to communicate with your friends and see what they're up to, there is Facebook. These are three most popular sites on the web. http://mostpopularwebsites.net/. With the right tools, a person can access anything using the internet. People use the internet regardless of age, young and old. This however can pose as a problem. Is the internet a safe place for children?
Most of us have heard of the Dateline NBC show called "How to Catch a Predator", and the famous catchline from Chris Hanson, "Why don't you have a seat over here" to the predators the catch as they walk in the door. The reason these people, usually older men, walk in the door is to meet, and have sexual activities with a person in the age range of 12-14 years old. I did say they meet a person, not just a young girl, because there have been many cases where an older man comes to meet and engage in sexual activities with a young boy. Both young boys and girls are not safe on the internet without being properly taught how to use the interent safely. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10912603/. This site is from dateline nbc and talks about how unsafe the internet can be. These people see it happen in front of their eyes, everyday.
Let's be honest, its inevitable that children are going to use the internet. They have to sooner or later, especially for school. http://www.teachkidshow.com/teach-your-child-how-to-use-the-internet/ The web page I posted here is steps on how to teach children to use the internet safely. There are definately things they need to stear way clear of, and maybe hold off of Facebook for awhile. My mom teaches second grade, and just the other day one of her students friend requested me on Facebook. I'm sorry, one I am twenty years old and do things a second grader should not see. If he see's pictures of me getting drunk with all my friends, and he looks up to me what do you think he is going to think about alcohol. Even things like facebook could seem harmless for a child to have, but it definately is not.

Facebook becoming addictive?
As everyone knows, especially after being in this class for a week, media is now a huge factor in our lives. We absolutely love to be able to go on our phones and looking at things such as the weather, is only a few seconds away. However, are things like this taking over our lives? Facebook is a huge new media that almost everyone has. "Facebook is a social networking service and website launched in February 2004" according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Facebook. As of July 2011, Facebook has over 750 million users, and it is being used worldwide. It is most active among highschoolers and college students, but has such a wide age variety, as my 8 year old cousin and my 75 year old grandma both have facebook. However, has facebook become so addictive it's taking over our lives?
Facebook has become very addictive in our society. For a lot of people, if they aren't on Facebook, they are thinking about it. I will be one of the first to admit that I love my Facebooking. My excuse is I love to be socail with people, and Facebook gives me an excuse to keep in touch with people, and that's how I use it. Even while writting this blog I got distracted because I checked my Facebook. It is just flat out addictive, and I'm not really sure why. However for some people, it has crossed that line. There have been numerous reports of child neglect because his or her parents couldn't get off of it. "Last Friday, I had three clients in my office with Facebook problems," said Paula Pile, a marriage and family therapist in Greensboro, North Carolina. "It's turned into a compulsion -- a compulsion to dissociate from your real world and go live in the Facebook world." http://articles.cnn.com/2009-04-23/health/ep.facebook.addict_1_facebook-page-facebook-world-social-networking?_s=PM:HEALTH. So why is Facebook so addictive that it has literally ruined peoples lives?
I just read a story about a lady called an old friend from highschool, and the husband answered the phone and said his wife was too busy to talk, because she was too deep in Facebook, and had been for several hours. Husband reports that when his wife is on Facebook, she is close to being unresponsive. Reports say it's so addictive because it's a great way to keep up with old friends, show photos of fun trips, or just everyday activities with your friends. Facebook is not only that. Now it has quizzes, games, pokes I mean the list goes on and on, and has become an everyday activity. http://www.thematrixfiles.net/blog/why-is-facebook-so-addictive/.
All in all, I think Facebook is a great new media. I love being able to catch up with people. There are many friends I would never ever talk to if it wasn't for Facebook. I am just saying that it needs to be kept under control, and maybe not spend every waking minute on it.
